It's a .bi file compressed with something other than gzip (older BI generations)
gzip-compressed BI is supported; other BI compression variants aren't yet. Ask the sender for an uncompressed MI export, or submit the file so we can support it sooner.
It's a legacy MI (2.10) whose text encoding can't be determined
Encoding is auto-detected (UTF-8, Shift_JIS/CP932, HP Roman-8). Strings that can't be decoded are skipped and disclosed in the loss report — the geometry still opens.

Are compressed BI files supported?
Yes for gzip-compressed BI (.bi). Files compressed with zlib, ZIP, or UNIX compress are not supported yet and will fail to load.
Can I convert MI to DWG or DXF?
MI to DXF conversion is available in beta. Lines, arcs, circles, splines, text, dimensions, hatches, and parts (as blocks) carry over; dimensions become generic dimensions and leaders become polylines, and the loss report shows exactly what was approximated or skipped. Direct DWG output is on the roadmap.
